Membership

If you have been practicing with us for a few months, you are invited to become an associate or a member of Richmond Zen. See below for how these two designations are different.

To sign up, please go to our online membership form. Thank you for your practice and effort!

Become an Associate if you wish to support Richmond Zen at the most basic level. This is understood as any contribution which promotes the continued well-being of the community.

Become a Member if you wish to make a strong commitment to their practice and the community. Members are asked to attend regularly for 3 months before applying, have a private introductory meeting with Richmond Zen’s head priest, make a membership pledge, and help maintain aspects of our practice (bell ringing, chant leading, cleaning, tea making, etc.). They help Richmond Zen thrive, rather than merely survive. Members have voting privileges and may also play an organizational role, such as serving on the board of directors.

Supported by You

Richmond Zen is supported in many ways: from practicing zazen together, to volunteering for tasks, to donations from our friends and members.

Donations are tax-deductible. Richmond Zen is an independent 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization wholly supported by individual donations. Thank you for your generosity. You can make a contribution online via our secure PayPal button, or mail donations to our mailbox.

Zen tradition teaches that nirvana, or enlightenment–true peace and freedom–is found in the midst of our everyday world. So it is fitting that we found RVA right in the middle of NIRVANA!
